Hosted online via Zoom, we’re covering important subjects to support intervention strategies across three weeks 7pm – 9pm:

– Tuesday 16 March

– Tuesday 23 March

– Tuesday 20 March

This course will be CPD certified by Can Do Courses, and will count as 6 CPD points towards your annual requirements.

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex autism spectrum condition that describes those whose main characteristic is to avoid everyday demands and expectations to an extreme extent.

The strategies to manage PDA are different to the strategies that can be effective for individuals with other forms of autism.  Many parents and teachers feel frustrated and helpless.  Young people with PDA can behave very differently at home and school, and therefore are often told that their child’s behaviour is a result of their parenting.

Many Local Authorities do not recognise PDA as it is not in the DSMV.   This course can help teachers, LSAs, TAs and parents know some best practice for the right kind of support.

Your tutor for this course is Karen Ferguson (BSc (Hons), PGCE, MEd).  Please see more about Karen on our “About” page.

You will:

–  Understand what it means:  Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA).

–  Recognise the impact which PDA has on an individual in different areas of life.

–  Learn more about the key principles of positive behaviour management and support strategies.

–  Know how to reduce the impact that PDA has on learning, and how to support behaviour for learning.

Karen’s sessions will include many practical examples of how to best support young people who have PDA and improve their life chances as a result.

**There will ample opportunity for questions, individualised strategies and sharing good practice.**

The materials include courses resources which can be used in a variety of settings and which can be contextualised to suit the environment whether at school, college, training centre, Alternative Provision or at home.
